Press Release: Erie County Parks, Partners Host Interclub Event at Grover Cleveland
The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, in conjunction with The First Tee of Western New York and the Buffalo District Golf Association (“BDGA”), has announced the formation of a First Tee interclub team to play in interclub matches being held on July 3rd at Grover Cleveland Golf Course. Teams from over 30 clubs in the BDGA play in “interclub” events throughout the golf season, bringing the area’s top junior golfers together in a round-robin format with the champion teams in each division, as well as the individual league medalists, competing in a season-ending stroke play overall championship.
“Grover Cleveland golf course has served as a ‘home course’ for the young golfers at The First Tee of WNY, so to have them assemble a team for this competition is exciting and shows how far they’ve come,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “The interclub matches are a real test of skills for these golfers and are also a tremendous learning opportunity, and I thank the BDGA and First Tee of WNY for working with our Parks Department to bring the interclub matches to Grover.”
“The First Tee of Western NY is proud to have a team as part of the BDGA Interclub Program, providing a great opportunity for some of our best golfers to compete with other junior golfers throughout WNY. It would not have been possible to pull a team together without the support of the NY State Golf Association, the BDGA and Erie County. We are also excited to be able to host our interclub match at the historic Grover Cleveland Golf Course, where we administer our programming in the summer,” said The First Tee of Western NY Executive Director Tim Frank.
“The First Tee of Western NY is integral to the success of junior golf throughout Western NY. The BDGA is looking forward to partnering with The First Tee of Western NY to attract the next generation of youth to our great sport. We are thrilled to continue our ongoing relationship with Erie County and host an Interclub match at Grover Cleveland Golf Course” said BDGA Executive Director Mark Rydza.
Parks Commissioner Daniel J. Rizzo added, “The Erie County Parks Department is excited to be hosting the BDGA Interclub event on July 3 at historic Grover Cleveland golf course. The course is challenging and rewarding, with accuracy an essential for low scores. We are looking forward to a great competition and lots of excitement.”
