Young, Dobyns & Svoboda Set To Tee Off at Valhalla for 2024 PGA Championship

May 16, 2024

LOUISVILLE, K.Y. – Three professional golfers from New York State join a star-studded field May 16-19 for the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

Scarborough native and 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Cameron Young headlines the group for his third PGA Championship appearance. The world No. 16 finished T3 at Southern Hills in 2022, but missed the cut in the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill. The 27-year-old Young enters play still searching for his first win on tour, but boasts four top-10 finishes so far this season - including at the Masters and Waste Management Phoenix Open

Club professional Matt Dobyns joins Young in the field at Valhalla. The 46-year-old is currently the PGA Head Professional at Meadow Brook Golf Club in Jericho, NY. Dobyns was the Metropolitan PGA’s Player of the Decade from 2010-2020 as well as the 2015 PGA Player of the Year. He is one of only six players to have won multiple PGA Professional Championships (‘12 & ‘15).

New Rochelle’s Andy Svoboda is the final Empire State native in the field. Svobada plays out of Butler National Golf Club in Oak Brook, IL where he is the PGA Head Professional. Svoboda played at the collegiate level at St. John’s University in Queens, NY, where he was 2001 Big East Conference Champion. He was the 2023 Connecticut PGA Player of the Year and 2022 Metropolitan Assistant Player of the Year.

Valhalla will mark Dobyns’ sixth appearance at a PGA Championship. He has yet to make a cut at the tournament and last appeared in 2018 at Bellerive GC. The club pro secured his spot in the field via the PGA’s “Team of 20,” finishing T16 in the PGA Professional Championship at Fields Ranch in Frisco, TX. Originally from Austin, TX, Dobyns plays right-handed but once he gets to the green, he turns around and putts from the left side.

Svoboda, 44, will be making his inaugural PGA Championship start in Louisville. Like Dobyns, he qualified with a strong showing at the PGA Professional Championship in Frisco, finishing T2. Svoboda has qualified for five U.S Opens, has three victories on the Korn Ferry Tour, and two New York State Open championships under his belt.
