Summerson fires 74 in final round to win Boys’ title
CLAYVILLE, N.Y. -- Jeremy Summerson wanted this title badly.
The 14-year-old freshman from Cobblestone Country Club let his play do the talking as he rebounded from a rough start and played near flawless golf over his final 10 holes to win the 59th New York State Boys’ Amateur Championships Wednesday at Cedar Lake Club in Clayville.
Summerson shot 2-over-par 74, and finished with a two-day total of 149, five strokes ahead of Jake Roach, who was solo second at 154. Ian Wagner and J. Holland Humphries tied for third at 156, and Evan Sitts was fifth with a total of 160. Taylor Samuel and Cedar Lake’s Michael Mandel tied for sixth at 163.
“It’s a huge relief to win this,” Summerson said. “I hope there are many more great things to come.”
The opening nine had a bit of everything for Summerson. He double bogeyed the par-5 1st hole and was immediately two strokes behind Roach, who began the day tied for the lead after carding 75 during the first round on Tuesday. He rallied with birdies on the par-5 3rd and par-4 4th to grab a stroke advantage. After building his lead to three shots over Roach after six holes, Summerson made bogey on No. 7 and double bogey on No. 8 to fall back into a tie.
The match remained tied after 11 holes, before Summerson pulled away for good by playing his final seven holes at 2-under par. Leading by five strokes with three holes remaining, Summerson showed only a few signs of nerves. He pounded his drive green high on the 322-yard par-4 17th, and hit a beautiful tee shot and approach on the par-4 18th. Summerson missed short birdie putts on both holes, but pars were all he needed during that closing stretch.
“I was down early, then I made some birdies and he had some bogeys,” Summerson said. “On the back nine I pulled away a bit, but didn’t think it was over until I finished. It was just a great win for me. It’s something I’ve wanted for a while, and I’m proud of how I played.”
Luke Stanley finished solo eighth at 164, and Jack Bailey, Tyler McDonnell and Anthony Delisanti tied for ninth at 166.
