Sample Becomes Youngest Met Open Champ in 105-Year History
WEST CALDWELL, N.J. – Earlier this month, 17-year-old amateur Luke Sample captured the 2020 Met Open Championship and became the youngest winner in the tournament’s 105-year history.
He sealed a three-stroke victory by shooting 68 (-3) in the final round, to finish at 8-under 205 at Mountain Ridge Golf Club in New Jersey.

Only seven other amateurs have claimed the Met Open title, and he joins the ranks of Chet Sanok, Jerry Courville Sr., George Zahringer III, Jim McGovern, Johnson Wagner, Andrew Svoboda, and John Stoltz.
Stotz was the last amateur to win in 2005 at Old Westbury. Johnson Wagner was previously the youngest winner at 21 years and 5 months old, during his 2001 victory at Bethpage State Park's Black Course.
Sample, who now plays out of Old Oaks Country Club had a banner season in the Met region, capturing the Met Junior, finishing as Met Amateur runner-up, and then capping off the summer with a historic win at the Met Open. He’s the first player to win the Met Open and Met Junior in the same year.
The Manhattan resident, who’s verbally committed to Duke University, has already collected several other coveted amateur titles in his young career. He’s won the last two NYS Boys’ Junior Amateur Championships (was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19), the 2018 Met Boys’ Championship, and the 2017 NYS Boys’ Sub-Junior Championship.
