Paul Hart and Kevin Broderick Win 2014 N.Y.S. Senior Four-Ball Championship
COOPERSTOWN, NY - The Albany duo of Paul Hart (Pinehaven CC) and Kevin Broderick (Orchard Creek GC) needed four extra holes at Leatherstocking to claim the 2014 N.Y.S. Men's Senior Four-Ball Championship. After a first round 73, which left them tied for fifth place with the Bellevue CC team of Paul Auletta and Randy Young, they thought it was unlikely that a final round 2-under 70 would put them in contention. But with difficult scoring conditions, it was good enough for the pair to finish tied for the lead with Elmira's Don Van Gorder and James Rogers, and Rochester's Paul Parrone and Bob Weston.
The sudden death playoff started on the par-5 18th, which measures 505 yards and skirts Otsego Lake for its entire length. All three groups made their par, and moved on to the short but difficult 6th hole, a par-4 of 350 yards. This time Paul Hart was in the best position, with an uphill putt of roughly 15 feet for birdie. His birdie putt slid off to the right, but the par matched that off Rogers and Van Gorder. The Parrone/Weston team failed to convert their putts for par, so only the two teams remained. On the 17th tee, a par-3 that also plays along Otsego Lake, both groups made par and advanced to the 18th hole. Now on the 18th hole for the third time today, Paul Hart made birdie and ended the playoff.
