NYSGA Golf Escapes: Explore Central New York

May 22, 2025

Welcome to the launch of NYS Golf Escapes — a curated series from the New York State Golf Association designed to help members explore golf, food, and adventure across the Empire State. These getaways spotlight the best member-affiliated clubs, regional experiences, and can't-miss local spots — because your next golf trip shouldn't feel like work to plan.

We’re starting with a destination that blends championship courses, lake country charm, and bucket-list scenery: Central New York. Whether you're squeezing in a long weekend or organizing a full-blown buddies trip, this region offers the perfect mix of play and relaxation.

Golf Worth the Drive (and the Repeat Trip)

There’s no shortage of top-tier public and member-access golf in Central NY — and the variety of layouts makes this region a hidden gem for golf travelers.

Turning Stone Resort | Verona, NY

This five-course golf resort needs no introduction. Home to Atunyote, which hosted PGA TOUR and Champions Tour events, and fan-favorites Shenendoah and Kaluhyat, Turning Stone is a golf destination in itself. Add in on-site luxury accommodations, a massive spa, restaurants, nightlife, and a casino — and you’ve got a one-stop shop for serious play and serious relaxation.

Pro Tip: Book an afternoon round on Shenendoah followed by dinner at TS Steakhouse for views of the entire region.

Seven Oaks Golf Club | Hamilton, NY

A Robert Trent Jones Sr. design known for its rolling fairways and collegiate setting on Colgate University’s campus, Seven Oaks is a CNY staple. The course layout rewards ball strikers, but wide corridors keep it friendly for a wide range of handicaps. The back nine, with its winding streams and thoughtful routing, is pure upstate bliss.

Fun Fact: Jones also touched Oak Hill and Cornell University's course — this one feels just as strategic, but far more serene.

Timber Banks Golf Club | Baldwinsville, NY

This Jack Nicklaus Signature Course sits along the scenic Seneca River and offers wide fairways, bold bunkering, and top-tier conditioning. The blend of risk-reward holes, water-lined approaches, and a walkable layout makes Timber Banks a favorite for upstate golfers. It's located just outside Syracuse, making it an easy stop on any multi-day itinerary.

Pair It With: A morning tee time followed by a short drive to the Erie Canal trail for an afternoon walk or ride.

Local Flavor That Goes Beyond the 19th Hole

Golf builds the appetite, and Central NY delivers in a big way when it comes to food and drink. The region’s culinary scene combines rustic charm with creative flair — all with that unmistakable Upstate New York warmth.

TS Steakhouse & Upstate Tavern (Verona, NY)

Located at the top of the Turning Stone Tower, TS Steakhouse offers panoramic views, expertly prepared steaks, and an upscale dining experience to wrap up a big day. For something more casual, Upstate Tavern brings comfort food with a local twist — think NYS craft beer, burgers, and elevated pub fare.

Ray Brothers BBQ (Bouckville, NY)

If you’re near Seven Oaks, you can’t skip Ray Brothers BBQ — regularly ranked among the best BBQ joints in New York. Known for its slow-cooked brisket, pulled pork, and house-made sauces, it’s the ideal post-round refuel. Bonus: they host live music most weekends.

Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards (Lafayette, NY)

Named the #1 apple orchard in the U.S., Beak & Skiff is more than just a seasonal stop — it’s a year-round destination for hard cider tastings, craft cocktails, casual bites, and incredible countryside views. If you're in the area, it's a no-brainer for lunch, gifts, or post-round sips.

Must Try: The 1911 Rosé Cider, made on site.

Off-Course Experiences for the Full Escape

When you’re not lining up putts, this region offers a variety of outdoor experiences and local sights that round out the perfect getaway. Central NY and the Finger Lakes are rich with state parks, charming towns, and natural beauty — the kind that makes you want to extend your stay.

Green Lakes State Park

One of the most unique natural features in the state, Green Lakes is home to two rare meromictic lakes — meaning the water is vibrantly blue and crystal clear year-round. It’s a perfect spot for a morning walk, quick hike, or even a post-round picnic. Golfers can also play the park’s own 18-hole course for a more casual round.

Chittenango Falls State Park

A hidden gem in the region, this 167-foot waterfall is surrounded by lush trails and peaceful overlooks. Bring your camera and walking shoes — it’s worth the short drive.

Verona Beach State Park

Located just north of Turning Stone on Oneida Lake, this beach and recreation area is ideal if you’re traveling with family or looking to unwind near the water.

Skaneateles Main Street

Boutique shopping, lakefront cafes, ice cream shops, and wine bars line this charming downtown. It's a great off-day or post-round stroll — especially if you’re staying in the Finger Lakes for a long weekend.

Erie Canal Trail & History Stops

Explore one of New York’s most iconic waterways with a walk or bike ride along the Erie Canal Trail. Towns like Baldwinsville and Syracuse have interpretive stops that connect you to the region’s rich industrial past — a great way to blend fitness with history.
