Moore's Monthly: NYS Championships

As we approach the end of June, Championship season is upon us. While we have conducted a couple of team championships already, our individual Championships are my favorite and the talent level of our champions is something to see. We’ve been fortunate to have some of the game’s great players win our Championships, and you never know when the next great player will be competing with us for the first time.
It’s been our honor to run these Championships for the last century and we hope to be doing it for another 100 years. What makes our Championships great, in my opinion, is the meritocracy it represents. Just like the US Open we watched last weekend, the NYS Amateur Championships are open to any of our 150,000 NYSGA member golfers statewide who have the desire and talent to compete with the best our state has to offer.
If you are on the fence about competing in one of our events, I say go for it. Personally, I have been on the fence about trying to qualify, but since this year will be our 100th Men’s Amateur Championship, I think I’ll give it one more shot. I played the 75th at Dutchess and there probably won’t be many players who can say they competed in both. The field is shaping up to be one of the most talented ones we have ever seen, thanks to the hard work of our Championship staff, Committee, and our host venue, Wykagyl Country Club.
Even if I don’t make it as a competitor, I will be there in a working capacity and look forward to being a part of it. If you are one of the 156 players lucky enough to tee it up, good luck. I look forward to seeing you at the scoring table!
