Morin, of McCann Golf Course, started on the 15th hole. She went five-over in her first eight holes due to a double bogey on 17 and three more bogeys. Morin did well to bounce back with three consecutive pars to find herself near the top of the leaderboard.
“At some point I just realized I’m in a beautiful place,” Morin said. “I look forward to this event every year, I’m swinging freely, I’m just going to enjoy myself. Once you get more relaxed, the shots get better.”
Morin stayed consistent for the rest of the day with only one double bogey on the round. She also had ten pars and seven bogeys. Morin was one of the few players in the top 10 to not record a birdie.
Morin says it's her fourth time competing in the Women’s Senior. She finished ninth last year but it’s her first time being in contention heading into the final round. She believes her previous experiences taught her the patience required to excel at this tournament.
Earlier this year, she teamed up with Ingrid Narken (Thendara Golf Course) to win the Women’s Senior Four-Ball at Leatherstocking Golf Course for her first state championship. Morin hopes to stick to playing her game tomorrow in order to fend off a crowded leaderboard and to add her first individual state championship.
“There’s a lot of fabulous players,” Morin said “I’m just going to play my game and swing freely… This golf course is hard enough that you have to be kind and patient with yourself."
Mayne started on the first hole and found her first birdie on the par-4 seventh hole. Her lone double-bogey came on the 13th but she bounced back quickly with a par and a birdie on the ensuing holes.
Mayne saved par on the 16th from 15 feet-out but bogeyed the final two holes for a round of nine-over. Like Morin, Mayne is a former Women’s Senior Four-Ball winner as she paired up with Karen Feldman to win in 2021.
Christy Malo, Bethany Bernatovicz, Pennie Carlo, and Vaso Kroto finished tied for third at 11-over. Malo (Park Country Club), like Morin, had ten pars without a birdie but recorded three double bogeys. Bernatovicz (River Oaks Golf Club), who claimed the Senior Mixed Team earlier in the month, birdied two of the three par 5s. Carlo (Kanon Valley Country Club) also had ten pars, five bogeys, and three double bogeys. Kroto (Pendleton Creek Golf Club) birdied the seventh hole for a round of 82.
In the Super Senior division, Madelyn Hornstein (Drumlins Golf Club) used three birdies to jump out to a three-stroke lead; she finished at nine-over. Karen Feldman (Columbia Golf & Country Club) is closest to the leader at 12-over. Marilyn McDermott (Tuscarora Golf Club) sits in third place aided by two birdies on par 3s.
Chris Phillips (Valley View Golf Course - Utica) leads the Legends Division after day one. Phillips birdied the second and fifth holes to finish at 13-over, 84. Narrowly behind her is a four-way tie for second place at 15-over between Kitty Colliflower (Oak Hill Country Club), Kathy Harkins (Ballston Spa Country Club), Barbara Harrison (Oswego Country Club), and Grace Kuqali (Drumlins Golf Club).
The champions will be decided tomorrow after 18 holes. The shotgun-start tees off at 9:00 am.
