Luke Feehan and Matthew Lowe Tie for Lead at 143
The second round of the 92nd N.Y.S. Men’s Amateur Championship consisted of two vastly different playing conditions. In the morning wave, players were greeted by warm and windy weather, while the course played just as firm and fast as it had for the first round. Those who played in the afternoon had a false start after a cold front pushed through bringing plenty of rain and lightning, delaying play for two hours. This rain not only brought cooler temperatures but softened the course allowing players to be more aggressive on the now receptive greens. Adam Condello took advantage of his luck of playing in the afternoon, posting a tournament low 2-under par 69 to tie for tenth place. But it was the morning’s Matthew Lowe and Luke Feehan who are tied for the lead at 1-over par.

Lowe got off to a quick start on his round in the morning with a birdie on the second, the most difficult hole on the course. He also birdied four and five to get to 3-under par, but bogeyed the eighth to make the turn at 2-under. On thirteen, the 203 yard par-3, Lowe made another bogey to fall to 1-under par. The next par 3, the fifteenth, he would find the front bunker only to play his second to the back fringe. From there Lowe would three putt for a double-bogey five. He finished with three straight pars to post a 1-over 72.
Feehan began his round on the back nine with five straight pars but bogeyed fifteen and eighteen to make the turn 2-over par. After paring the first four on his back nine, Feehan birdied the par-5 fifth to get it back to one over for the day. On eight, the downhill par-4 with a pond in front of the green, he made a bogey five but would follow that with a birdie on the ninth, his last hole for the round, to finish with a 1-over 72.
First round leader Matthew Van Niekerk posted a second round 73, good enough to put him one stroke back of the leaders heading into the final day. Tied for fourth is Gair Carrigan and Patrick Milkovich at 3-over par, and Billy Gaffney, Corey Haas and Eric Edmunds sit only three strokes off the lead at 4-over par.
The final two rounds will be played on Thursday, with tee times beginning at 7:30am and 12:30pm off the first and tenth tees. Players were paired based on their two-day total, and will be sent off in the same twosomes for both rounds.
