JAMESVILLE, N.Y. -- Each season, the New York State Golf Association (NYSGA) welcomes seasonal interns provided through the United States Golf Association’s (USGA) P.J. Boatwright Jr Internship Program.

This program was established in 1991 across all Allied Golf Associations in North America, and is designed to give experience to individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in golf administration, while assisting golf associations in the promotion of amateur golf on an entry level basis.

Interns are exposed to tournament preparation and setup, event administration and management, learning many essential skills unique to golf administration. Many former interns nationally and within the NYSGA’s ranks, have moved into full-time positions and success within the golf industry.

Take a few moments to “Get to Know” this year’s interns below:

Daniel Mort, USGA P.J. Boatwright Intern – SDGA
Hometown: Liverpool, N.Y.

About: I just graduated from SUNY Oswego with a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, and played on the golf team all 4 years. Prior to this internship, I worked at two golf clubs, Radisson Greens and Oswego Country Club. I started playing golf at the age of 4. 

Internship Goals: Improve my communication skills, learn as much as I can about tournament preparation, and make more connections within the golf community.

Career Goals: Become SHRM-SCP certified, grow the game of golf in some capacity, and work my way up to a senior management position in a golf organization.

Hobbies: Running, hiking, and really anything golf related

Matt Whaley, USGA P.J. Boatwright Intern – NYSGA
Hometown: East Syracuse, N.Y.

About: I currently attend Keiser University in West Palm Beach Florida where I study golf management. I finished my associates in the program this past year and am looking to continue to get my bachelor’s degree. My experience includes working at Turning Stone Resort’s Atunyote Golf Club in the pro shop, helping with day to day operations. I have also worked in the golf department at Dick’s Sporting Goods over the past five years. While at school in Florida, I caddie at PGA National part-time and spend a lot of time volunteering at tournaments, like The Honda Classic and The Arnold Palmer Invitational. I am very grateful to be selected for this internship and excited to get to work.

Internship Goals: Leverage my internship into a career by learning new skills and networking with professionals in the industry. 

Career Goals: Work for the PGA Tour in a role where I can help grow the game.

Hobbies: Playing golf, listening to music, watching football and cooking
