Eleven Represent NYSGA at 8th U.S. Four-Ball in Kiawah Island

(UPDATED 5/26) – The side of Bradford Tilley/ Pat Wilson were the only Empire State duo to advance into match play at the 2023 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

They qualified for the 8th seed after collaborating for 13-under 129 during the stroke play rounds on the Cassique and River course at the Kiawah Island Club, respectively.

In the Round of 32, they matched up against North Carolina and Illinois natives Scott Harvey and Todd Mitchell. They dominated the match and won 5 and 3 to secure a spot and advance to the Round of 16.

In the Round of 16, Tilley and Wilson faced off against Nathan Cogswell and Colt Sherrell, who come out of the state of Washington. Tilley and Wilson were playing from behind the entire match and was never able to close the gap. The New York duo was defeated 3 and 2, knocking them out of the championship. 

The other New York State sides were not able to make the cut:

Jamie Miller of Silver Creek and Tony Hejna of Cleveland, Ohio but originally of Crag Burn Golf Club in Ellicottville scored a 1-under 141 for the opening round. 

Darin Goldstein of New York City barley missed the cut by one stroke and shooting 7-under. 

Brad Monroe of Syracuse and Kevin Vandenberg of Pulaski shot 1-under for a 141. 

Thomas Finn of Locust Valley and his teammate Adam Pecora of Oyster Bay could never get in control and finished 2-over.

Christopher Defrost of Kingston also was very close to the cut line and was able to score a 6-under, 136.

Michael Lewis and teammate Thomas McCarthy both from New York City had a strong showing and shot 4-under over the two days.

Kiawah Island, S.C. – Eleven players from the Empire State are competing in the 2023 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, May 20-24, at Kiawah Island Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The New York representatives are past NYSGA champions and Crag Burn Golf Club members Tony Hejna of Cleveland, Ohio and Jamie Miller of Silver Creek, Brad Monroe of Syracuse and Kevin VandenBerg of Pulaski, Darin Goldstein of New York City and his partner Trevor Randolph of New Jersey, Thomas Finn of Locust Valley and Adam Pecora of Oyster Bay, Christopher DeForest of Kingston who's partnered with John Krick of Arizona, Sleepy Hollow Country Club member Bradford Tilley who resides in Connecticut and his partner Pat Wilson of New Jersey, as well as Michael Lewis and teammate Thomas McCarthy who both reside in New York City.

The championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play on Saturday and Sunday to start out the weekend. The first two days will feature the 128 sides (256 players) and will be reduced to the low 32 sides (64 players) for match play rounds. The reaming 3 days will feature 5 more rounds of match play, leading up to the final day where the semi-finals being played in the morning and 18-hole championship match in the afternoon. 

The field will compete on two different courses during the stroke play rounds: the Kiawah Island Club Cassique and River courses. The Cassique course is playing at 6,949 yards and plays to a par of 71. The River Course is setup at 6,487 yards and plays to a par 72.

Sectional qualifying took place between August and December 2022 at 53 sites around the country.

Monroe / VandenBerg were the qualifying medalists with 64 at the NYSGA-conducted qualifier held at Brookfield Country Club in Clarence, New York on September 29, 2022. Hejna / Miller also qualified for the championship by winning a 2-for-1 playoff, after posting 65. Both sides have competed in the national championship before. Monroe / VandenBerg advanced to match play before losing in the Round of 32 at CC of Birmingham. Hejna / Miller qualified in 2021, and missed the two-round cut at Chambers Bay.

Tilley / Wilson were the qualifying medalists collaborating for 64 at Silver Spring Country Club in Ridgefield, Connecticut on October 3, 2022. Lewis / McCarthy also qualified with a 66.

Finn / Pecora were the qualifying medalists with a 62 at the Laurel Links Country Club in Laurel, New York on September 19, 2022. Goldstein / Randolph also qualified out of the site with 63. Goldstein / Randolph previously qualified for the national tournament in 2021, where they missed the cut at Chambers Bay.

DeForest / Krick were the qualifying medalists at Waubeeka Golf Links in Williamstown, Massachusetts on September 12, 2022. They collaborated for a 12-under 59 to advance.
