An 8-Under 64 Propels Thomson to 11 Stroke Lead in Boys' Championship
Greece, NY - Will Thomson, the defending N.Y.S. Boys’ Amateur Champion from Pittsford, has had a very productive summer of golf. The 13 year old became the youngest golfer in USGA history to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship, shooting rounds of 68 and 66 at Mendon Golf Club to earn medalist honors. He then was invited to compete in the Porter Cup, a national invitational tournament played at Niagara Falls CC, where he finished tied for 62nd. He continued his stellar play on Tuesday at Ridgemont, posting an 8-under 64 to take a 11 stroke lead.

Thomson started his round on 10, and was one over through three holes after failing to get up and down for par on 12. He quickly rebounded with birdies on 13 and 14 to get to 1-under par. Another birdie on 17, a difficult 372 yard par-4 fronted by a creek, got him to 2-under. On the front (his second nine), Thomson started with pars on the first two holes and then chipped in for birdie on three from the front of the green. He then birdied four, five, six, seven, just missed for birdie on eight, and birdied nine to finish his final nine with a 30, 6-under par.
In second place at 3-over par is Ryan Zogby of New Hartford. His 75 included three birdies and six bogeys, but he finished his round with an even par 36 on his final nine holes. Williamsville’s Jacob Martz is currently in third place after posting a 78, and Aidan Shaw (Orchard Park), Ian Wagner (Medina) and Kyle Gilroy (Manlius) are all tied for fourth at 80.
The final round will begin Wednesday, August 6 at 7:30am.
