Young Anchors Three Players in US Open Field at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. – Three Empire State golfers will tee off at Pinehurst Resort & CC (Course No. 2) for a chance at the 124th U.S. Open Championship, June 13-16.

UPDATE 5/16 -- Cameron Young and Brandon Wu finished T67 and T70 respectivley, as Bryson DeChambeau captured the US Open Championship Trophy.

Young made his second consecutive US Open cut with a five over performance across the first two rounds. A third-round 75 (+5) and final round 74 (+4) was not enough to put the Scarborough native in contention, and Smith finished at eleven over for the tournament.

Also beginning the weekend at five over, Wu struggled on Saturday with an eight over 78. A final-round 73 (+3) brought him to a sixteen over total.

UPDATE 5/14 -- Two of the three New York State players in the field battled their way to sneak within the cut-line at a devlish Pinehurst No. 2 in Rounds 1 and 2. Cameron Smith (73-72) and Brandon Wu (74-71) each shot 5-over to advance into weekend play. 

With a 75-76 (+11), Andy Svoboda missed the cut at his fith US Open Appearance.

Cameron Young, a native of Scarborough in Westchester County and the 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, is competing in his fifth US Open. He made his first US Open cut last year at the Los Angeles Country Club, finishing T32 at three over par. The Wake Forest University product is 2-2 in made cuts at majors this season, finishing T9 at the Masters and T63 at the PGA Championship. His top finish this season was a solo second at the Valspar Championship.

Two-time New York State Open Champion Andy Svoboda will join Young in Pinehurst, making his second major appearance of the PGA season. He fired a 68-65 (-9) in final qualifying at the Canoe Brook CC in Summit, N.J. to earn his position in the field. Svoboda also qualified for the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Course, missing the cut by three strokes. Pinehurst will mark the 44- year-old Svoboda’s fifth appearance at a US Open, with his only made cut coming at Torrey Pines in 2008. Svoboda hails from New Rochelle, N.Y., and is currently the PGA Head Professional at Butler National GC in the Chicago suburbs.

The third NYS player to qualify is Brandon Wu, 27, of Scarsdale. Wu, a Stanford University product, has played in two US Opens - Pebble Beach in 2019 and Winged Foot in 2020. He’s made 16 appearances on Tour this season, making seven cuts and twice finishing in the Top 25. Wu qualified with a 69-70 (-3) performance at the Dallas Athletic Club (TX) qualifier on May 20th.

Pinehurst No. 2 was designed by Donald Ross, while he was working as a golf professional at Pinehurst Resort. The course opened in 1907 and has undergone renovations by Rees Jones in 1999, as well as most recently by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2011. 

The course will play at 7,548 yards during the tournament, with a par of 35-35 for a total of 70.
