February 28, 2023

JAMESVILLE, N.Y. -- The New York State Golf Association (NYSGA) is pleased to announce the official New York State Amateur Golf Championship schedule for the upcoming centennial season in 2023!

The NYSGA annually conducts 17 state championships, which will grow to 19 this year, hosted by top member clubs throughout the Empire State.

We are adding two new senior divisions to the 2023 championship schedule: The NYS Men's Senior Amateur Four-Ball, which will be contested on a separate golf course from the Men's Four-Ball for the first time, will add a new "Super Senior" division to this year's championship. Additionally, the NYS Men's Super Senior Amateur will split off from the Men's Senior this season, and the Super Senior Championship will include a "Legends" division for competitors ages 70 and older.

The 100th edition of the NYSGA’s flagship tournament, the NYS Men’s Amateur Championship, will be contested at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, August 7-9. The prestigious Westchester club was established in 1898, and shaped by several notable architects throughout its history, with the most significant changes to the course influenced by Donald Ross (1919), A.W. Tillinghast (1930), along with modern updates by Coore & Crenshaw. The centennial event will mark the first time a NYSGA championship will be hosted by Wykagyl, although the club has welcomed many top met area competitions and notable professional events over the years.

The 93rd NYS Women’s Amateur & 14th Mid-Amateur Championships, will be hosted by the Southern Tier’s Corning Country Club in Corning, June 26-27. The 1919 Thomas Winston design has supported several other New York State championships through the decades, including the Women’s Amateur on two prior occasions in 1965 and 1975, Men’s Senior in 1982, Girl’s Junior in 1989 and most recently the Women’s Senior & Super Senior in 2017. The club was formerly the host site of the LPGA Tour’s Corning Classic from 1979-2009.

The 2023 NYS Boys’ & Girls’ Junior Amateur Championships will head north to the Lake Placid Club in Lake Placid, July 26-27. This will be the first time that the state junior tournament will be hosted by the club’s classic adirondack golf courses, with the Boys’ 18U field playing the 1909 Seymour Dunn designed Links Course and the Girls’ 18U and Boys’ 14U fields competing on the Mountain Course laid out by Alexander Findlay in 1910 and redesigned by the famed Alister MacKenzie in 1931. The club situated in the heart of the Adirondack mountains has previously hosted Women’s Seniors in 1967, 1977 and 1978, Men’s Seniors in 1943, 1944 and 1970, three Women’s Amateurs from 1942-1944, and two consecutive Men’s Amateurs in 1943-1944. The three different championships held at Lake Placid Club from 1943-44 were played simultaneously due to the impact of World War II.

Crag Burn Golf Club in East Aurora will host the 39th NYS Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, September 22-24. This Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design, built in 1972, opened its arms to the Men’s Mid-Am three times in 1986, 1999 and 2010. The club recently hosted the 2019 NYS Men’s Amateur and the NYS Men’s Senior Amateur in 2017.

The 66th NYS Men’s Senior Amateur Championship will be held at New Hartford’s Yahnundasis Golf Club, September 11-13. The club, founded in 1898, and golf course later designed by famed architect Walter Travis, has hosted twelve NYSGA championships. The list includes one previous Men’s Senior in 1946, Women’s Amateurs in 1932, 1950, 1977 and 2018 with the Women’s Mid-Am, Men’s Amateur in 1946, 1953, 1958, 1968 and 2007, and Men’s Mid-Amateur in 1998 and 2017. Yahnundasis was the founding site of the New York State Golf Association in August of 1923, and early club member Sherrill Sherman was the NYSGA’s first president. The NYSGA will be hosting a Centennial Celebration at the founding club during this championship in September.

For the first time, the 27th NYS Men’s Super Senior & Legends Amateur Championships will be held separately from the Men’s Senior, with En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott hosting this year’s championship August 14-15. A new “Legends” championship division will be added this year for competitors who are age 70 or older. Current site of the PGA Tour Champions Dick’s Sporting Goods Open, En-Joie had previously hosted the NYS Men’s Senior in 1975, prior to the super senior division being added.

Lake Placid’s Whiteface Club & Resort will host the 70th NYS Women’s Senior Amateur & 16th Super Senior Amateur Championships, August 22-23. The John Van Kleek and Walter Hagen advised design has been a longtime favorite for this NYSGA championship, with at one time the association leadership hosting eight consecutive championships (1969-1976) at the Adirondack gem established in 1898. The course also hosted Women’s Seniors 1979, 1982, 1983, 1987, 2007 and 2016, along with four Women’s Amateurs in 1959, 1963, 1966 and 1968.

The 12th NYS Men’s Amateur & 11th Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championships will be split up for the first time in 2023. They will both be contested at Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, May 21-22, utilizing Shenendoah Golf Club designed by Rick Smith and Kaluhyat Golf Club designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The two championship fields will play one competitive round on each golf course. Additionally, a new "Super Senior" championship division will be added to the Senior Four-Ball for players ages 65 and older. Kaluhyat previously hosted the 2015 NYS Men’s Amateur, and Shenendoah was the venue for the 2006 PGA National Club Professional Championship in 2006.

Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club in Sodus Point will host the 5th NYS Women’s Amateur & Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championships on July 31. This will be the fourth NYSGA championship hosted by the 1924 layout which hired a teenage Robert Trent Jones, Sr. as their first club pro (1930-35). The course nestled on the southern shore of Lake Ontario has previously hosted two Women’s Amateurs in 1990 and 2010 (along with mid-amateur), and a Girls’ Junior in 1987.

10th NYS Amateur & Senior Amateur Mixed Team Championships will be held at Leatherstocking Golf Course at the Otesaga Resort in Cooperstown on June 5. The classic 1909 Devereux Emmet design hosted the Men’s Four-Ball nine years in a row from 2013-2022, along with a Men’s Amateur in 1964, the Women’s Amateur in 1958 and 1962, a Men’s Mid-Amateur in 2001, and a Men’s Senior in 1972.

The NYSGA would like to thank the leadership and staff at each of this year’s host club venues for their support of the association in helping our organization to continue the tradition of great amateur golf competition in the Empire State.

Tournament registration will open on Wednesday, March 1st at 12pm via Golf Genius tournament websites, which you can access by clicking here.
