U.S. Amateur Hosts Four Players from New York State in 2022

(Update on 8/18) - None of the four New Yorkers in the 122nd U.S. Amateur field were able to advance to match play this week.

Luke Sample turned in the best performance of the four at 9-over, posting a sample 76-74-150.

Andres Acevedo, from Texas, qualified at the NYSGA conducted qualifier at Timber Banks. He advanced to the round of 64, posting a 4-over 69-76-145 in stroke play.

He fell in the first round of match play 3 and 2 to California’s Dylan Menante.

PARAMUS, N.J. - The 122nd U.S. Amateur Championship kicks off this week at Ridgewood Country Club and will feature four players from the state of New York.

The tournament begins with a rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday. The field will be reduced to the 64 low scorers heading into the first round of match play on Wednesday.

The tournament will conclude with a 36-hole final on Sunday, August 21. 

Syracuse native Nick Bove will be making his first U.S. Amateur appearance. Bove was the medalist at the NYSGA conducted sectional qualifier at Timber Banks Golf Club, his home course. He fired a first round 63 and finished the day at 10-under. Bove competes collegiately for the Le Moyne College men’s golf team.

Christian Cavaliere, of Katonah, is coming off a runner-up finish at the Westchester Open in June. He is set to make his fourth appearance in the U.S. Amateur Championship. He missed the cut by two strokes in 2021 at Oakmont Country Club. He played his college golf for Boston College.

Farmingdale’s Matthew Lowe recently medaled in the NYSGA conducted sectional qualifier for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, firing a bogey-free round of 65. Lowe is no stranger to USGA events, having competed in the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur.

Luke Sample is a two-time New York State Boys’ Junior winner and captured a Boys' 14U title the year prior. The New York City product also has wins in the Met Open Championship and the Met Junior Championship. He has competed in the U.S. Junior Amateur but is making his first appearance in the U.S. Amateur.

Andres Acevedo hails from Texas but secured the second qualifying position at Timber Banks behind Bove.

The Ridgewood Country Club Course will be set up 7,487 yards and play to a par of 71. The Arcola Country Club Course will be set up at 7,256 yards and play to a par of 70.
