Thomas Finn Shoots First-Round 66 en Route to NYSPHSAA Boys Golf Championship
Elmira, N.Y.- Thomas Finn captured the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) 2022 Boys Golf State Championship on June 6 at Mark Twain Golf Course.

The senior at Locust Valley High School blew away the competition winning by four strokes. His first round 6-under 66 was the low round for the tournament. He sealed the victory with a second round even-par 72 to finish at 6-under 138.
Finn is the first State Boys High School Golf champion in three years. The 2020 and 2021 state championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School’s CJ Merrit, a senior, turned in a 2-under 142 (69-73) to claim second place. In third place, eighth-grader Josh Yan turned in an impressive 1-under 143 (70-73).
Jack Berl, a senior at Victor High School, carded an even-par 144 (71-73) to finish in fourth place. Rounding out the top six were seniors Gabe Williams (Waterville High School) and Mark Vitels (Garden City High School) who both finished at 1-over 145. Williams would lock up fifth place due to the tiebreaker and Vitels would fall to sixth.
Players advance to the state championship via sectional qualifying.
