Roy entered last week’s Pinnacle Bank Championship sitting 22nd in the Korn Ferry Tour points list. The top-25 finishers in the standings earn their PGA TOUR card.
A strong performance in Nebraska would be enough to give Roy a berth onto the TOUR for the first time in his career. The first step was making the cut, which he did.
Saturday’s round let in a sliver of doubt as to whether Roy would be able to pull off that which he’s been seeking since first becoming a pro in 2012. He posted nine bogeys en route to a 73, but still sat at 2-under heading into the decisive final round.
The 32-year-old, born into Syracuse golf royalty, bounced back on Sunday. He sat at 4-under through 17 but missed a nervy eight-foot par putt on the 18th to close out the tournament.
In the end, the closing putt would not keep Roy from ascending into the upper echelon of golf. His 5-under 279 for the closing tournament of the Korn Ferry Tour regular season proved to be more than enough to secure 24th on the points list.
It was an emotional scene as Roy looked on with his wife, Annie, as they learned that Roy’s dream had become a reality.
It’s been a long road for Roy, who played collegiately at Long Beach State University. He graduated Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School in 2019, seven years after turning pro. After two long years grinding on the Korn Ferry Tour, Roy is at long last PGA TOUR bound.
Roy is the son of past NYS Men's Amateur and Mid-Amateur Champion Jim Roy, who made appearances on both the PGA and Champions Tours during his career.
