Stimets Headlines 43rd U.S. Mid-Am Qualifying at Mohawk
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The NYSGA held a sectional qualifier on Wednesday for the 43rd U.S. Mid Amateur Championship at Mohawk Golf Club. It was the second sectional qualifier conducted in as many days, with the first playing out at Crag Burn on Monday.

With a five under 66, Ricky Stimets of Osterville, MA earned the top qualifying spot at Mohawk. Stimets flew out of the gate with three consective birdies to open his round and made only one bogey in the impressive performance. Stimets recently finished runner-up at this year's Massachusetts Amateur Championship and won the 2023 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship. He grabbed the second alternate spot at last year's U.S. Mid Amateur sectional qualifier at Conneticut National Golf Club with a 70 (-1).
Canada's Vincent Mucci posted a four under 67 to earn the second qualifying spot. Mucci's 67 ended up being the only bogey free round in the field. He made two birdies and an eagle to secure his spot in the field at Kinloch Golf Club. Mucci, of Terrebonne, Quebec, finished T3 at the Quebec Men's Amateur Championship in 2020. He will be competing in his first USGA event.
Christian Cavaliere of Katonah, NY was the sole Empire State player to qualify. He turned in a 69 (-2) with three birdies to receive the last of three invitations to the USGA championship. Cavaliere qualified as an amateur for the 123rd U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. After opening with an even par 72, Cavaliere was unable to make the cut with a second-round 77. The former standout at Boston College has qualified for three U.S. Amateur Championships and won the Westchester Amateur three years in a row (2017-2019).
Mike Mumford of New York City and Mark Sommerfeld of Canada picked up the two alternate positions. Each player turned in a one under 70 at Mohawk.
Mohawk Golf Club played at 6,681 yards and a Par of 71. This year's U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship will be held at Kinloch Golf Club in Midlothian, Virginia September 21-26.
