Six Represent NYS at 7th U.S. Four-Ball in Birmingham

(UPDATED 5/17) Central New York duo Brad Monroe / Kevin Vandenberg lost their Round of 32 match in the 2022 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at the Country Club of Birmingham.

They lost the opening match 1 up on the 18th hole to Blake Humbles / Connor Reis of California. Monroe / Vandenberg won the opening hole, and they held a slight edge until the back nine, where Humbles / Reis birdied the fourteenth to take their first lead of the match, and never let it up.

(UPDATED 5/16) – The side of Brad Monroe / Kevin Vandenberg were the only Empire State duo to advance into match play at the 2022 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

They qualified for the 14th seed after collaborating for 10-under 131 during the stroke play rounds on the Country Club of Birmingham's East and West Courses, respectively.

In the Round of 32, the will matchup against California's Blake Humble and Connor Reis.

The 36-hole cut fell at 133, with a 10-for-9 playoff to finalize the 32 teams moving into match play.

Jack Lessing and partner Matt Broome finished at 6-under 135, two strokes short the cut line.

The brother duo of Sam and Will Bernstein finished at 138. Matthew Virtue and partner Peter Bourdon finished at 163.

BIRMINGHAM, AL. – Six players from the Empire State are competing in the 2022 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, May 14-18, at the Country Club of Birmingham.

The New York representatives are Sam and Will Bernstein of New York City, Brad Monroe of Syracuse and Kevin Vandenberg of Pulaski, Jack Lessing of Cold Spring and his teammate Matthew Brooke of Alabama, and Matthew Virtue of Rye and his teammate Peter Bourdon of Rhode Island.

The championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play on Saturday and Sunday, after which the 128 sides (256 players) will be reduced to the low 32 sides (64 players) for match play rounds, until a champion side is scheduled to be decided with an 18-hole match on May 18.

The field will compete on two different courses during the stroke play rounds: the Country Club of Birmingham’s East and West courses. The East Course is setup to 6,811 yards and plays to a par of 70. The West Course is setup at 7,166 yards and will be played to a par of 71.

Sectional qualifying took place between August and December 2021 at over 50 sites around the country.

Bernstein / Bernstein qualified out of Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, Connecticut on September 20, 2021.

Lessing / Brook and Monroe / Vandenberg shared the medalists at the Inwood Country Club on October 7, 2021.

Virtue / Bourdon advanced through as first alternates from the qualifier at Newport National Golf Club in Middletown, Rhode Island on September 14, 2021.
