Shoemaker / Lee Represent NYS In 8th US Women's Four-Ball

May 12, 2023

UPDATED 5/17 --

Ami Gianchandani and Kaitlyn Lee lost their Quarterfinals match 1 Up to Angela Zhang and Alice Ziyi Zhao. It was a close match and had to go all 18 holes to find a winner to move on to the Semifinals.

Gianchandani and Lee headed into the Round of 16, and a matchup that featured two NYS teams had formed where they had to face Bailey Shoemaker and Kaityln Schroeder for a spot in the Quarterfinals.

Lee and Gianchandani were up fast and quickly by going 2 up after four holes. After the front nine, the match was at a stand-still with Schroeder and Shoemaker down 2 with a new nine in front of them. However, Lee and Gianchandani kept the pressure on with making three birdies on the first five holes of the back nine.

Lee and Gianchandani went on to win the match 4 and 3. An upset that we did not see coming, especially after the poise and dominance that the two ladies showed.

DuPont, Wa. -- Two golfers with ties to New York State are competing in the 8th U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball championship, May 13-17, at The Home Course in DuPont, Washington.

Bailey Shoemaker, a native of West Edmeston, who now resides in Dade City, Florida is once again teaming up with another young Florida standout, Kaitlyn Schroeder of Jacksonville.

The two teenagers took the field by storm last year, finishing as the runner-ups to Georgia duo of Thienna Huynh and Sara Im (lost the 18-hole final, 1-down). Prior to that final match, they were on a tear, having played the equivalent of 31-under-par golf – with the usual concessions – through their first four matches (a total of 65 holes).

The duo was exempt from qualifying after last year’s result. Shoemaker also competed in the following 2022 USGA Championships: U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Women’s Amateur & U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur. She also won the 2022 Florida Women’s Amateur Champion and was low amateur in the Florida Women’s Open for a second year. She’s also competed in the last two Augusta National Women’s Amateurs. Prior to leaving New York State, she won three consecutive NYS Girls’ Junior titles from 2017-19.

The other Empire State player in the field is Kaitlyn Lee of Scarsdale who is once again teaming up with fellow Yale women’s golfer, Ami Gianchandani of Watchung, N.J.

The Yale duo had early success in their first appearance in 2021, and shared co-medalist honors after a pair of 69s during the stroke play rounds at Maridoe Golf Club in Texas.

They qualified for this year’s championship in September of 2022 out of Watchung Valley Golf Club in New Jersey, and were medalists at 66.

2022 NYS Women’s Amateur Champion, Kennedy Swedick of Albany, teamed up with New Jersey’s Angelina Kim in that same New Jersey qualifier, and finished as the first alternate team.

The Home Course will be setup a 6,487 yards and play to a par of 72. It is a public course cooperatively owned by Washington Golf and the Pacific Northwest Golf Association.

The starting field consist of 64 sides (128 golfers), who will compete over 36 holes of stroke play, after which a cut will be made to the low 32 sides for match play. Five 18-hole rounds of match play will follow to determine a champion. The semifinal and championship matches will be contested on Wednesday, May 17.
