Schmitt and Beatty Win N.Y.S. Women's Amateur & Mid-Amateur Championship Titles
Poughkeepsie, NY – July 17, 2014. The 2014 N.Y.S. Women’s Amateur Championship concluded today at Dutchess Golf Club. Christine Schmitt (Locust Hill CC) shot a final round 3-over par 74 to finish with a three day total of 224, winning the championship by four strokes. Emily Doyle and Victoria DeGroodt finished tied for second, four strokes back at 228. Kit Creighton and Rebecca Studin rounded out the top five of the N.Y.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
Schmitt, who started the day tied for the lead, built a three stroke lead after eight holes only to watch it shrink to one stroke several holes later after she made a double bogey 6 on the par-4 tenth. But she was able to steady the ship with a birdie on the twelve and played her last seven holes at even par. Schmitt credited her father, who was acting as her caddie this week , for helping her to stay focused. "It just takes your mind off it [the pressure of the round] a little bit,” when discussing the value of having her dad as a caddie and a calming force.

The 2014 N.Y.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship also wrapped up today, with Joanna Beatty (McCann GC) shooting a three day 240 total to edge out Nancy Kroll by one stroke. Kim Kaul finished in third place, four strokes back (244). This marks the first time that Beatty has won the N.Y.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Similar to Schmitt, Beatty was able to play her last seven holes even par. Her chipping and putting were crucial today, noting, “I was chipping and putting very well on the back nine.”
