Nine Players Represent New York State at U.S. Mid-Am
ERIN, Wis. - Nine players belonging to clubs in New York will take to Erin Hills and Blue Mound Golf & Country Club to compete in the 41st U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

Players will begin stroke play on Saturday, September 10. After 36 holes, the field will be reduced to the low 64 scorers heading into the first day of match play on Monday, September 12. The championship will conclude with on Thursday, September 15.
Farmingdale’s Matthew Lowe fired a bogey-free 6-under 65 to earn medalist honors at the NYSGA-conducted Mohawk Golf Club qualifier. He turned at 2-under after birdies on Nos. 3 and 5 and separated himself from the pack on the back nine with consecutive circles on 12, 13, 14. He finished with one more inside ten feet on the home hole. This will be Lowe’s first appearance in the national mid-amateur. He regained his amateur status recently after testing the pro ranks for a short period.
Kyle Downey, of Fairport, also marched through the Mohawk qualifier bogey-free. His birdies came on two par 4’s, the 5th hole and 11th holes at Mohawk. This will be his second U.S. Mid-Am appearance. He reached the match play Round of 64 in 2018.
Sam Weiss, of New York City, and Beacon’s Ryan Gabel both fired rounds of 2-under in the Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA)-conducted qualifier at The Whippoorwill Club to earn a berth into the championship.
The second MGA conducted qualifier was held at Essex County Country Club. Millburn’s Thomas McCarthy fired a bogey-free round of 4-under 67 to earn medalist honors and punch his ticket to Wisconsin.
Buffalo’s Andrew Romano prevailed in a playoff at the NYSGA-conducted qualifier at Park Country Club. He is set to make his first appearance in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
This year’s Westchester Amateur champion Ryan Coughlin qualified at Connecticut National Golf Club. The Rye native is making his first appearance in this event.
Rochester’s Yaroslav Merkulov is appearing in his second straight U.S. Mid-Amateur. He has also played in the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Four-Ball Championships. Merkulov is a four-time New York state champion winning the Boys’ 14U Junior, 18U Junior (twice) and Men’s Amateur.
Bradford Tilley brought home the 2019 NYS Mid-Amateur title at Tuscarora Golf Club. He also captured this year’s MGA Amateur at Fenway Golf Club. Tilley played in three of the last four U.S. Mid-Ams.
Erin Hills will be set up at 7,358 yards and will play to a par of 35-36–71. Blue Mound Golf and Country Club, which will serve as the stroke-play co-host course for the two days of stroke play, will be set up at 6,726 yards and play to a par of 35-35–70.
