New York’s Green Set to Represent USA at 43rd Curtis Cup at Sunningdale Golf Club
UPDATE 9/4 -- Great Britain & Ireland claimed a 10 1/2 - 9 1/2 victory over Melanie Green and the United States at the 43rd Curtis Cup Match.
Green collaborated with Rachel Kuehn to draw first blood in the tournament with a 6&4 victory over Patience and Mimi Rhodes in Friday Foursomes. On Saturday, Green and Kuehn would go on to halve their Saturday Foursomes Match against Lottie Woad and Sara Byrne.
Later in the day on Saturday, Green and another teamate, Anna Davis, were defeated in a Four Ball Match by Lorna McCymont and Beth Coulter. Despite a birdie-eagle start, McCloymont and Coulter went bogey-free with nine birdies to take the match 2&1.
Green battled with Mimi Rhodes in the final Sunday Singles Match. With the U.S. down three points entering the final day, the American squad needed every win they could get. At one point, the Americans lead in 6 of 8 Sunday matches, and an eleventh-hour comeback looked possible. Green herself led by as many as three holes near the mid-way mark of her match with Rhodes.
However, the winds seemed to shift and the GB&I team regained control. Lorna McClymont overtook Megan Schofilll, the 2023 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, and secured a crucial full point. Rhodes battled back against Green and took back the lead at the 14th hole. While Green finished strong and won the 18th hole to halve the match, it was too little, too late.
The United States lost by a full point, 10 1/2 - 9 1/2, in their first defeat at a Curtis Cup Match since 2016.
SUNNINGDALE, UK – Medina's Melanie Green is one of eight players set to represent the United States at the 43rd Curtis Cup, to be played at Sunningdale Golf Club outside of London, England August 30-September 1.

Green has been having a season to remember in Women's Amateur Golf. The former No. 1 recruit in the state of New York and 2x NYSPHSAA Champion became the first American to take home The Amateur Championship in nearly three decades. Green defeated Lorna McCloymont of Scotland in a tight, two-up battle at the 121st playing of the illustrious event, hosted by R&A at Portmarnock Golf Club in Ireland. The win granted Green an exemption into the 124th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Country Club, where Green made the stroke play cut and advanced to the Round of 32. Green just concluded her college career at the University of South Florida, where she was a four-time All-Conference selection and made nine Top 10 finishes in 2024.
With the invite, Green becomes the tenth New Yorker to play in a Curtis Cup. The most recent New Yorker to participate was Annie Park of Levittown, who competed in the 2014 championship at St. Louis Country Club.
The Curtis Cup is described by the R&A as the most prestigious team trophy for women amateur golfers. The championship has been contested by teams representing Great Britain & Ireland, as well as the United States every two years since 1932. The United States presently leads the series 31-8-3 and has won the past three championships. Each playing of the tournament rotates between a site in the United States and the United Kingdom. The 2022 tournament took place at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.
The format involves three foursomes and three four ball matches on each of the first two days of competition and eight singles matches on the final day. A victory in each match scores one point. In the event a match goes 18 holes without a winner, each time will be awarded a half point.
Four-time U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Meghan Stasi will captain the USA delegation, while four-time LPGA champion and 2009 Women’s British Open winner Catriona Matthew will lead the Great Britain & Ireland Squad.
Sunningdale Golf Club (Old Course) was designed by Willie Park Jr., and opened in 1901. It will be set up at 6,488 yards and will play to a par of 36-36-71. The past host of the Senior Open Championship, Women’s British Open and British Masters will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2026.
