Narken Claims Women's Senior at Columbia, Kahler/Harrison Take Super and Legends Titles

CLAVERACK N.Y. --The NYS Women’s Senior Amateur Championships wrapped up Wednesday morning with a shotgun start for all three divisions, Senior, Super Senior, and the newly-minted Legends Division, as a field of 79 played finished their final 18 holes of the championship. With rain throughout the day and delaying play, we named our champions.

In the 72nd Women’s Senior Amateur, there was a battle between past champions,  Kim Kaul, of East Aurora Country Club, and Ingrid Narken, of Thendara Golf Course, which came down to the final hole, where Narken claimed her second NYS Women’s Senior Championship by one stroke.

Down the final stretch, Kaul made a par on hole 17, giving her a one-shot lead going down 18. Kaul ended up barely missing her putt on 18 for bogey and settling for double. Narkin finished in the group in front and was named the 2025 NYS Women’s Senior Champion.

Narkin after the round, “When I was playing, I didn't check the leaderboard at all.. I hate to win a tournament like that, but I'm happy to be on top again.”

“This is what you work for all year, this is one of the big events, you don't know with this game, you just go out and try to do your best and come out on top.”

Pennie Carlo, of Kanon Valley Country Club, claimed solo third place, and behind her and wrapping up the top-5, was a two-way tie for fourth place with Patricia Mayne, of Western Turnpike Golf Club, and Bethany Bernatovicz, of River Oaks Golf Club. Behind them were 2007 NYS Women’s Senior Amateur Champion Janice Lavigne, of Ravenwood Golf Club, and Nikki Fowler, of Stone Creek Golf Club, both tied for sixth place. 

Last year’s NYS Women’s Senior Champion, Teresa Cleland, of Bellevue Country Club, placed in eighth place. Wrapping up the previous two in the top ten with Louise-Anne Morin, of McCann Golf Course, coming in solo ninth, and claiming tenth was Sandra Jackson, of Whippoorwill Club.

The Senior Amateur field course played at 5,457 yards and par 70.

The Super Senior Field also came down to the final hole with Karen Feldman, of Columbia Golf and Country Club, leading by one shot on the 18th hole at her home course. Susan Kahler, of Ballston Spa Country Club, was one shot back and birdied the final hole while Feldman bogeyed. 

This is Kahler’s first NYS Women’s Super Senior title, but previously won the 2022 NYS Women’s Senior Amateur at RaNic GC and the 2013 NYS Women's Senior Amateur at Wayne Hills CC.

Kahler on being back in the winners' circle, “I am extremely grateful for being able to win a trophy today..I was lucky enough to hit a really nice shot on the last hole. I didn't know where I stood, but I had some people giving me thumbs up in the back.”

Madelyn Hornstein, of Drumlins Golf Club, finished solo third, while Marilyn McDermott, of Tuscarora Golf Club, claimed solo fourth place. Finishing up the top five was Linda Sturges, of Oswego Country Club.

After them, there was a tie for sixth place with both Deborah Enders, of NYSGA eClub - Central NY, and Rudder Hulce, of The Island Green Resort and Golf Course finishing. Heather Morrison, of Burden Lake Country Club, finished in eighth place while Andi Smaila, of Oneonta Country Club, finished behind her in ninth place. Wrapping up the top ten was Sandy Morely, of Burden Lake Country Club.

The Super Senior field played 5,268 yards and a par 70.

In the first-ever NYS Women’s Legends Senior Amateur, Barbara Harrison of Oswego Country Club, the winner of last year's NYS Women’s Super Senior, claimed victory, adding another women's senior title for the second straight year. Harrison ran away with this one, winning by 13 strokes.

Harrison posted rounds of 83-83 in the championship and didn't even know she won when told on the 18th green.

Harrison on becoming the first NYS Women’s Legends Champion, “It's great to be the first of something; it's special.”

Harrison on the course, “Very tough, no flat greens, and the course was beautiful, but it was very tough.”

Behind Harrison and claiming the runner-up was Kitty Colliflower, of Oak Hill Country Club, and a previous NYS champion, as she won the 2019 Women’s Super Senior Amateur Championship. Claiming third place was Susan Held, of Indian Hill Golf Club, while one shot back of her was Ellen Densen, of Woodstock Golf Club, and placed solo fourth.

There was a two-way tie for fifth place between Grace Kuqali and Jo Ann Shupe, both of whom were one shot back of Densen. After them was Patricia Roadarmel, of Drumlins Country Club. 

Wrapping up the top ten was Kathryn Oppendisano, of Ballston Spa Country Club, in eighth place, with Caroline Merritt, of Columbia Golf and Country Club, right behind her in ninth. In solo tenth was Gale Ketcham, of Newman Municipal Golf Course.

For the age group winners, the 55-59 age group was Bethany Bernatovicz, of River Oaks Golf Club. In the 60-64 year old flight it was Pennie Carlo, of Kanon Valley Country Club claiming the honor. Madelyn Horenstein, of Drumlins Golf Club won the 65-69 flight, while Jo Ann Shupe, of Beaver Meadows Golf Club won the 70-74 flight. Lastly in the 75+ flight is Susan Held, of Indian Hills Golf Club.

The legends field played at 5,198 yards and par 70.
