Moore's Monthly: Posting Season

April 22, 2025

A monthly column from the NYSGA’s Executive Director, Bill Moore

I don’t know about you, but I am still recovering from Rory’s win at The Masters a week ago.  The ups and downs of Championship golf rarely disappoint, and last weekend was a wild ride.

The first major of the season always coincides with the beginning of what we call “Active Posting Season”, which is the time of year when scores can be posted for handicap purposes.  Every year I get a fair amount of questions from our members asking why they can’t post a score from a round they played on a beautiful day in March, or a fluke day in December.

The simple answer is that the Course Rating and Slope Rating for each set of tees at a golf course are both based upon playing length and difficulty under “normal” conditions.  In our part of the world the conditions are certainly far from normal during the off season, and this could unfairly distort your Handicap Index.

Over the next month on our website, social media, and here in our newsletter we will be highlighting a number of common Rules in the World Handicap System as a refresher for those of you with a Handicap Index.  Some of the situations are fairly common, some are a little more nuanced.  However there is one easy way to make sure you are in compliance almost 99% of the time:  Post all your scores.  As long as you aren’t playing alone (a rule which I think is silly) and play at least 9 holes, post it.  While you’re at it, make sure your buddies are posting their scores too.  The more scores you post, the more accurate your index will be and the more fair and fun your matches against your friends will be.  That’s what it's all about anyway.
