Moore's Monthly: NYSGA Scholarship Program

August 31, 2023

A monthly column from the NYSGA's Executive Director, Bill Moore

Did you know that the NYSGA has awarded over a half of a million dollars in scholarships since its inception in 1967?  While we started small - and initially we just granted scholarships for students going into turfgrass management or the like - our program has grown steadily and this year we will grant over $30,000 to college students statewide.

In order to be eligible, a candidate must demonstrate a financial need and be working in at least their second season in “service to golf” at a NYSGA member club.  “Service to golf” includes those working in the golf shop, bag room, superintendent’s crew, or food and beverage operations.

The young people that we have selected recently are amazing - some are great golfers and some have never taken a stroke - but all of them have a relationship with the game.  You can check out last year’s recipients here.

All of the funding for the scholarships comes from donations from individuals and member clubs, as well as the operations of the New York State Golf Association, and we are so thankful for all the support we have received over the years.  If you would like to learn more about the Scholarship Program or our other endeavors, check out our website at www.nysga.org/foundation
