Moore's Monthly: NYSGA Internships
A monthly column from the NYSGA’s Executive Director, Bill Moore
I recently had the honor of speaking to the newest class of USGA P.J. Boatwright Interns at their orientation at USGA HQ in Far Hills, NJ. As a 1997-1998 Boatwright Intern, it was a full circle moment for me as I was in their seat almost 30 years ago looking to get my start in golf administration. I hope I was able to give them a glimpse into what is in store for them this summer and what the experience can turn into if this industry is where they want to start their careers. I also told them they better start getting used to 5:30am wake up calls…golf administration starts early.
The Boatwright Internship program was started over 40 years ago by the USGA to identify and train the next generation of golf administrators and has been enormously successful nationwide. The USGA lends its name, not to mention millions of dollars, to draw applicants to the program which aids regional & state golf associations in conducting their events. The NYSGA has had at least one Boatwright Intern every year since 1996, and thanks to the generous funding from the USGA we have been able to enhance and grow the NYSGA Internship program over time. This season we have a total of 5 interns working for us in tournament operations and communications.
If you are interested (or know someone who might be) in seeing what the NYSGA Internship Program is all about, check our website by clicking here. We are all set for 2025, but the search for quality applicants never stops and if you think we may be a good fit for summer employment in 2026 feel free to send us a note. In addition, our interns are always on site at our championships, qualifiers, and events so if you have any questions or want to say hello, please do. I am sure they would love to tell you about their experience with us.
