Monaco and Cupp Top Round 2 Leaderboard at NYS Women’s Championships
Elmira, NY – The second round of the 2016 NYS Women’s Amateur has come to a close, and the field have been cut to the low 50% and ties. Eight players are left in the Mid-Amateur field, and seventeen in the Amateur field. The day started out steamy, with rain following in the early afternoon and high winds chasing the players to their finishing holes. But the indecisive weather didn’t stop this field from chasing the round one leader, Marianna Monaco, who held onto her 3 stroke lead after the close the second round.
NYS Women’s Am Leaderboard after Round 2
After the second round of the 87th NYS Women’s Amateur Golf Championship at Elmira CC, the leader board is tight. Marianna Monaco of Yonkers, NY holds the lead after carding 76 her second round. Monaco posted a two-day total of 148 and takes a 3-shot lead going into the final round. “After yesterday’s back nine, I knew there were birdie opportunities out there," Monaco said. "I didn’t have a great day off the tee, and that hurt me quite a bit.” She then commented that her blemishes off the tee left her with too difficult of approach shots to really go for the flagstick, but made a comeback with birdie on the 11th hole from the fescue that gave her momentum on the finishing holes.
Followed close behind Monaco is Bailey Coccoa of Latham, NY and the defending champion Kyra Cox of South Salem, NY. Coccoa made an impressive comeback after her first round 79, carding a 1-under par 34 on the front-nine followed by an even par 38 on the back to post a 1-under par 72 for a two-day total of 151. Cox has remained consistent after two rounds posting 75 her first round and 76 today, placing her tied for second next to Coccoa at 151. Jenny Buchanan of Albany, NY is third on the leaderboard with a two-day total of 152. Marah Penn of Hamburg, NY is close behind at 156.
After the second round of the 8th NYS Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, for women golfers 25 years or older, Lauren Cupp of Rome, NY took a 5 stroke lead over the field.

Cupp made a comeback in the second round, carding a 78 to follow her 7-over par 80 during the first round. With a two-day total of 158, Cupp holds a 5 shot lead over the field. “I was able to settle down and play the last 14 holes in even par to break 80 on this difficult golf course.” she said after stuggling in her starting stretch. First round leader Tammy Blyth of Pittsford, NY posted an 84 for her second round putting her tied for second with 2014 winner Joanna Beatty of Newburgh, NY with two-day totals of 163. Chasing after the top - is Julie Murphy of Amherst, NY just 1 shot off second place with a two-day total of 164.
