Lee & Shirakura Represent New York State at 2nd U.S. Adaptive Open

(UPDATE 7/13) -- Nancy Lee of NYC finished tied for 11th place at the 2023 U.S. Adaptive Open Women's Championship. She finished at 60-over 276 over 54 holes at Pinehurst Resort and placed third in the Leg Impairment flight.

Doug Shirakura of Somers finished tied for 48th place in the Men's Championship at 35-over 251, and 20th in the Leg Impairment flight.

-- Two golfers from New York State will be in the field during the 2023 U.S. Adaptive Open Championship, July 10-12, at the historic Pinehurst Country Club on Pinehurst Course No. 6.

Douglas Shirakura of Somers, will be making his second U.S. Adaptive Open appearance, after last year being the inaugural championship. Shirakura is one of the top ranked Adaptive players competing in the tournament. In last year's tournament, he was able to finish in a tie for ninth place. Shirakura put together rounds of 75, 77 and 79 on Course No. 6 at Pinehurst, which played some 6,500 yards. He finished 15-over for the championship.

Nancy Lee of New York City, will be making her first appearance in the championship. She will be competing in the Women's Championship under the Leg Impairment category.

The U.S. Adaptive Open consists of eighteen holes of stroke play each day from Monday, July 10 through Wednesday, July 12. Now in its second edition, this national championship showcases the world’s best golfers with disabilities. The U.S. Adaptive Open Championship serves as the USGA’s 15th national championship, showcasing and celebrating the adaptive golf community by providing them the stage to achieve their dreams and compete for a national championship. 

The field includes 96 players, with spots reserved for at least five male players and two female players per impairment category. Impairment categories are: 

  • Arm Impairment 

  • Leg Impairment 

  • Multiple Limb Amputee 

  • Vision Impairment 

  • Intellectual Impairment 

  • Neurological Impairment 

  • Seated Players 

  • Short Stature 

Golf Channel will expand coverage of the 2nd U.S. Adaptive Open at Pinehurst No. 6 to include live reports from Andy Stevenson, near real-time highlight packages, player features produced by Golf Channel Films, and player interviews during Golf Today (1 to 3 p.m. EDT) and Golf Central (5 to 6 p.m. EDT) on Golf Channel from July 10-12. The final 30 minutes of Wednesday’s Golf Central will be dedicated to covering the U.S. Adaptive Open with live coverage of the trophy ceremony.
