Four Teams Tied After Round 1 of NYS Men's Four-Ball at Turning Stone
VERONA, N.Y. - Four teams sit atop the New York State Men’s Four-Ball leaderboard after one round of play at Turning Stone Resort’s Shenandoah and Kaluhyat golf courses. Low numbers were hard to come by on Sunday as rainy conditions soaked both golf courses ahead of the 1 p.m. shotgun start.
Though eight teams were able to break par in the Open Division, led by Gabe Ward and Aaron Walsh (Mendon GC); Jayson Clarke and Josh Desain (Wayne Hills CC), brothers Ryan and Tyler Edholm (Pendleton Creek GC); and college teammates Owen Corby (Monroe GC) and Anthony Maglisco (Pompey Club).

Each of the four sides fired two-under 70. Four teams trail them by one stroke, while five more are within two; including two-time Four-Ball champions Billy and David Hanes (Crag Burn GC).
Corby and Maglisco, who play on LeMoyne’s men’s golf team together, each contributed three birdies to their team’s effort. Their only blunder that kept them from turning in a sub-70 round came on Shenendoah’s 15th hole, where they both doubled.
“(Owen) started the day off in the pouring rain with a birdie on the first hole, so that got some momentum going,” said Maglisco. “We got off to a good start. We made a lot of birdies early then halfway through, got a little flat…(Owen) picked me up for a few. I picked him up for a few so it was kind of back and forth. We ham and egged it pretty well.”
Corby, a rising junior, was an integral part of Le Moyne’s 2025 campaign, as he was recently named to the Northeast Conference men's golf All-Conference Second Team. He tied for second place at the Northeast Conference Championship in April to help his team finish fourth overall.
“Most of the time I hit it straight. (Owen) hits it about 40 yards by me so I’m the leadoff guy and he’ll just bomb it by me,” said Maglisco. “That’s been the plan all week and hopefully we can roll the putts in.”
The two have found success at the state level on their own in the past. Maglisco won the NYS Boys’ 14U Junior Amateur in 2018, while Corby finished runner-up at last year’s 18U Junior Amateur Championship. Now, they’ll look to emerge from a bunched leaderboard on Monday and hoist their first NYS title as a team, as well as earn exemption into the 2025 NYS Men’s Amateur at Yahnundasis GC, which awaits the Open Division champions.
“Having a partner is awesome, especially one that I can really count on and trust,” said Corby. “We’ve always had a really close relationship. I feel like both of our games build off each other, so when we go out and play with each other it just builds confidence.”
SENIOR DIVISION
Past champion Wade Sarkis (Canandaigua CC) and seven-time NYSGA champion Jim Scorse (Stafford CC) combined to shoot the low round of the day across both courses (68). Sarkis contributed four red numbers to his team’s effort to Scorse’s three.
2022 champions Andy Bernatovicz (River Oaks GC) and Kenneth Riter (NYSGA eClub - Western NY) trail the leaders by one stroke heading into Monday’s final round, while two teams face a three-stroke deficit after opening at one-under; Bruce Levinson (Onondaga G&CC) / David Doing (Wa-Noa GC) and Brian Kumiega (Country Club of Buffalo) / Jeffrey Schauger (River Oaks GC).
SUPER SENIOR DIVISION
Two sides posted 3-under 69 on Sunday in the Super Senior, including Jim Burns (Durand Eastman GC) and Jim Johnson (Canandaigua CC), along with Jim Hamburger (McCann GC) and Kurt Swenson (Stamford GC).
Last year’s champions, Jim Mueller (Orchard Creek GC) and Kevin Broderick (NYSGA eClub - Capital Region), are one stroke behind the lead at 2-under par.
Five teams opened with 74s including 2017 champions Kevin Webb (Clifton Springs CC) and Bob Branham (Canasawacta CC).
Play will resume Monday morning with a shotgun start scheduled for 8:30 am.
