Will Hennessee of Tulsa, Okla. took the top qualifying spot, posting a six-under round of 66. A bogey-free round from the Seton Hall rising sophomore set him one shot ahead of the rest of the field. Just behind him was Siena College golf alumni, Nolan Crowley, from Saratoga Springs, who carded an eagle and four birdies to finish solo second at five-under par.
Phillip Minnehan, John Duthie, and Andrew Hahn grabbed the next three spots, each posting rounds of four-under par. Minnehan, from Rochester, N.Y. dropped two eagles on both par 5s on the front nine along with a bogey-free back nine to round out an impressive 68. Duthie, the 2007 NYS Men’s Amateur Champion, posted a four-under round.
He was three-under through ten holes, trending towards the top of the leaderboard, before a triple-bogey on hole 12 crushed his momentum and seemingly took him out of contention. But the 37-year-old responded with four birdies in his final five holes to get himself back inside the cut line and eventually grab a spot into the next stage. He finished with seven birdies on the day.
Hahn, from Cornwall, N.Y. also had himself a bogey-free round with four birdies on the card. Cooper Griffin from Weston, M.A. finished in 6th place with a score of 69.
An 5-for-2 playoff was held to decide the last two spots to advance to the final qualifier for the U.S. Amateur.
Jackson Saroney of Syracuse, and Ty Kaufman from Naples, F.L. both made pars on the first playoff hole to claim spots.
Cavalry Club was set up at 6,648 yards and a par of 72.
