Corey Eccles from Canada claimed medalist honors with a round of 68, four under par, along with being bogey-free. Eccles played steadily the entire day with four birdies and three of them on the back nine on a not-so-friendly Albany Country Club with greens speeds rolling over 11.
Behind Eccles was a familiar face in second place, Kyle Downey, of Fairport, N.Y., who is a two-time NYS champion, winning the 2023 NYS Men’s Amateur Championship at Wykagyl Country Club, and last year’s NYS Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Schuyler Meadows Club with a dominant performance, claiming the title by 10 strokes.
The final two qualifier spots came down to four players finishing at one under par. They were decided in a five-person playoff for two places, where Christian Cavaliere, of Katonah, N.Y., and Derek Rogers of N.Y. birdied the first playoff hole on hole 10, securing them both a golden ticket.
The two alternate spots went on to play hole 11, where the Canadian, Mark Baines birdied 11 to secure the first alternate, while Adam Friedman, of Westport, Connecticut, claimed the second.
Albany Country Club was played at 6,923 yards/par 72.
