Kyle Downey of Locust Hill Country Club again went under par to widen his 18 hole lead. Downey, who fired a course-record 63 in Round 1, put together a comparably quiet, yet still highly effective 71 (-1) on Saturday.
Despite opening with a bogey, Downey bounced back with a birdie on the Par 5, 2nd and went on to maintain pace for much of the round. His three Saturday birdies brought him to a total of 13 in just two rounds at Schuyler Meadows. The 2023 Men’s Amateur Champion carries an eight stroke lead heading into the final round.
While the top slot remained unchanged, some shuffling occurred behind Downey.
Wills Reardon of the Piping Rock Club turned in an even par 72 to gain control of solo second place. With an opening 70, Reardon now sits at two under par through 36 holes.
Benjamin Rublee of Country Club of Troy, Blake Gianniny of Country Club of Rochester and Joseph Feeney of Midvale Country Club are engaged in a three-way tie for third place.
Rublee’s two under 70 (-2) was the low round of the day and bumped him multiple spots up the leaderboard.
Three players - Jim Gifford of Mohawk Golf Club, John Duthie of Cornell University Golf Course and Sean Puleo of Schuyler Meadows Club - sit at T4 at even par. Duthie, who won the 2007 Men’s Amateur Championship as well as this year’s AIM Championship, turned in back-to-back 72s.
At the end of today’s round, the field was cut for the second time to the low 30 and ties. 33 players will tee off on Sunday for a shot at the Bob Hogan Cup. Play resumes at 8am tomorrow morning with the leaders teeing off at 9:40am.
Schuyler Meadows was set up at 6,837 yards and played to a par of 37-35-72.
