Downey Maintains Control Thru 36 Holes at NYS Mid-Am

September 27, 2025

TROY, N.Y. -- After a record-setting day one, Kyle Downey, of Oak Hill Country Club, put himself in a good spot to repeat as NYS Men’s Mid Amateur Champion this year. He followed it up with another solid round on Saturday, firing a 2-under 69 to maintain control heading into the final round.

Still, Downey was frustrated with his round, “I hit it better today than I did yesterday and shot a much higher score. A bunch of misreads on the greens just couldn't really get anything to drop.”

There was no topping the round one score for Downey, but he still knocked in three birdies on the front nine this afternoon and now holds a two-stroke lead at eight under par. Behind Downey in solo second is Austin Teal, of Schuyler Meadows Club, matching his first-round score of 68, and moves two shots off of the lead. Teal will be playing catch-up tomorrow and said his first two days he learned, “I know I can score out here, I have played it a couple of times, it’s not really my kind of golf course…there’s a lot of up and downhill shots.”

Brian McGovern, of NYPD Golf, fired in a second-round 70, one under par, and is three shots off the lead in solo third. Eric Terminello, of Knollwood Country Club, shot one over on Saturday and is at three under par overall. Wrapping up the top-five is a two-way tie at one under par with Jim Hirsh, of NYSGA eClub - Central NY, and Josh Desain, of Wayne Hills Country Club.

There is a three-way tie for seventh place with Kristopher Boyes, of Sheridan Park Golf Club, Jonathan Faber, of Mill River Club, and Matthew Lowe, of MGA eClub - Long Island, all tied at even par.

Wrapping up the top 10 with a four-way tie at one over par, Brett Cooper, of The Seawane Club, dropped in six birdies and an eagle, finishing with 69 (two under par) on Saturday. Also tied for 10th is host club member, Brody Yates, posting a round of 68 and a clean scorecard with no bogeys.

Timothy Saur, of Oak Hill Country Club, and Joe Quijano, of Country Club of Troy, are also tied at one over par.

The 36-hole cut fell at (+7), with 41 players advancing into Sunday’s final round of play.

The course setup is 6,434 yards and par of 71.

Tomorrow the remaining field will tee off from No. 1 from 8:00am to 10:10am.
