Chapman started on the tenth hole and bogeyed. It was his worst hole of the rainy morning as he’d go on to par the next four, and then birdie the next three. He’d sit at two-under after the first nine.

“I stayed patient, it was playing tough out there in the beginning with the weather,” Chapman said. “It was a lot different today than it was yesterday in the practice round with all the rain.”

His approach shots were on point. After parring holes 1-5, he put his second shot on six to about five feet and converted a birdie. On the short par-4, 7th, Chapman made a rare eagle, and followed it up with a birdie two holes later to close out the round.

Chapman played collegiate golf at both University of Delaware and St. Bonaventure University. He was exempt from qualifying after he finished tied for third in the 2025 NYS Mid-Amateur at Country Club of Troy. Chapman said he enjoys playing Donald Ross designs, as Glens Falls was designed by the NYSGA Hall of Fame member.

“[The course] is really fitting my eye well,” Chapman said. “[Ross is] one of my favorite architects so I seem to play well on a lot of his courses over the years.”

Owen Corby, from Monroe Golf Club, finished round one in second place. Like Chapman, he started on the tenth hole in the morning and really got going in the second stretch. After a one-under in, Corby birdied four holes of the out to finish at five-under with a round of 66.

Corby played golf at LeMoyne where he was one of two players in school history to have earned All-NEC honors in men's golf. The other was Anthony Maglisco, who shot 72 in the afternoon.

Liam Moloney (The GC at Mansion Ridge) ended his first round in third place going three-under. The 2025 Boys' 18U Junior Amateur champion had the best score of all the players who teed off in the afternoon. It didn’t look like it’d go that way initially as he bogeyed two of his first five holes after starting on the tenth. Moloney then proceeded to birdie three of the next four holes to end his first nine holes one-under.

He found a birdie on the third hole, a long par-3, and eagled the 7th, a short par-4. His lone bogey of his back nine came on the eighth as he wrapped up his round with a par for a score of 68.

Four golfers tied for fourth place at two-under. Colin Barber (Cobblestone Creek CC) made only one bogey and it came on the final hole. The St. Bonaventure golfer birdied the fourth, seventh and 14th holes en route to a solid round of 69. His college teammate Vinny Liguori also shot two-under. Liguori birdied the second, third and fourth holes. A par-4, a long par-3, and a par-5 respectively.

Joseph Dolezal, an athlete at St. John’s, recorded three bogeys on the front, balanced with three birdies. He found his rhythm on the back nine with two birdies and seven pars to finish at two-under. Jonathan Oakes, the 2024 NYS Boys' 18U Junior Amatuer champion, had three birdies in his first nine after starting on the tenth hole. After seven pars in the final stretch, he birdied the ninth hole, a short par 3 to shoot 69.

Twelve golfers finished in red figures after 18 holes. Only the top 40 players plus ties will advance after tomorrow’s round of 18 holes. Tee times begin at 7:30 from split tees.
